The sounds repeated please the soul –
…We love the falling rain
That softly pitters on the porch
…And patters on the pane.
Alliteration fills our ears
…Like trilling r’s in Spain,
Like opera singers singing scales
…Of la la’s in a chain.
Perhaps it is the heart of man,
…The pulsing in the vein,
That whispers sweetly, whispers for
…A whispered back refrain.

Confident and clever. A fun read!
[…] that distinguish poetry from prose? I would start with these: rhyme, rhythm, alliteration (https://thebardonthehill.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/alliteration-by-dennis-lange-2/), metaphor, simile, personification, and form (stanza and line). I can think of something else, […]

I love alliterations! You’ve used them cleverly in this delightful poem, loved it! 🙂
Thanks! For the longest, it’s been one of my favorites because of the sounds. I tried both to illustrate and define alliteration in the poem. I also did the same type thing in a poem about eye rhyme:

Well I haven’t run across the ones I couldn’t get the links to work for, but I’m finding all kinds of other treasures that I hadn’t taken time to read from earlier posts. This one is definitely one of my all-time favorites! And you’ve challenged my imagination now. I’m going to have to come up with one packed with alliteration.
You know, that’s one of the things that blesses me most about being a part of a blogging family. It’s the same thing that happens when I am active with the Expression Unlimited group that I belong to (writers and artists of wide variety). Being around gifted, creative people draws out gifts and creativity in me. It works that way when I teach as well. I had one creative writing class that was full of some of the most gifted, talented, creative, imaginative young people I’ve ever known. Their excitement and creativity kept me at a peak in my own work while I was teaching them. I appreciate so much being able to interact with people like you, Dennis O’Brien, and several others here on WordPress.
The links wouldn’t work because I didn’t check my work. 😦 I’ve corrected them now. Of course, now my quick fix to font and spacing problems (Firefox) didn’t work on my latest poem. 😦 Yes, I’ve commented some place (Reading To Write, I think), that I’ve gotten ideas for poems and learned a few things while reading the blogs of others here on WordPress.
Simply sublimely superb! 🙂
Thanks for the cute complimentary comment. 🙂
