Devouring Nature
The squirrels dug up my marigolds;
The cats chased birds away –
The ones I fed outside my panes,
Who winged in for buffet.
The deer ate through my flower bed
Like Hitler swept the Poles.
My dogs, when out, will chase the deer –
My nature love has tolls.
The problem is both mine and theirs –
All nature, I embrace;
I like it near to taste it all,
While that’s why they need space.

Lovely, Dennis. I really enjoyed the rhythm and the imagery. I especially liked your description of the birds winging in for a buffet — and the deer going through your garden like Hitler through Poland. I had to laugh at that one. I know it’s a serious image, but you’ve used it well in this whimsical fashion, and it works.
Ah, yes, the eternal struggle for balance! Well said–and engagingly so.
Very good.
Thanks. Since I wrote the poem, I’ve discovered two raccoons coming onto my deck at night, devouring cat food. 🙂
