My First Day Ritual
Today the kids are back in school;
The first day of their year.
And teachers now must teach and rule
While parents sigh and cheer.
I once was teacher; I’m retired,
And I will celebrate
The freedom I have now acquired
As others meet their fate.
So while the children fill the class,
And teachers start to work,
I’ll eat somewhere and raise my glass
To toast my greatest perk.

I too am retired – that blackboard and inscription! gives me palpitations, thank you Dennis.
Chris.
I had a big breakfast at Denny’s this morning and celebrated. 🙂
I went and played a round of bad golf – no time pressure!!
Chris.
I didn’t achieve the dignity of retirement, leaving teaching after less than twenty years, but every day that my husband goes off to teach, I am grateful (toast or no toast) that I am not doing so myself anymore! Takes more stamina, wisdom, patience, courage, charisma and grace than I ever had, and I am endlessly grateful to those of you who *do (or did)* teach with honor. Cheers!
Thanks. I hadn’t thought about it as the “dignity” of retirement, but just the freedom. 🙂
