In the Orchard-Days, when you
Children look like blossoms, too,
Bessie, with her jaunty ways
And trim poise of head and face,
Must have looked superior
Even to the blossoms, – for
Little Winnie once averred
Bessie looked just like the bird
Tilted on the topmost spray
Of the apple boughs in May.
With the redbreast, and the strong
Clear, sweet warble of his song –
“I don’t know their name,” Win said –
“I ist maked a name instead.” –
So forever afterwards
We called robins “Bessie-birds.”

No Wide Angles
A tall ship
Needs exactly this:
Tall photo.
——————–

Trailblazers
Learned from birds.
Do they have envy?
We owe them.
——————–

Or Any Year
Was that year
A roll of the dice –
Just mere chance?

Sane
It’s proper:
Bell in the belfry,
And not bats.
In The Heights
Many kites
In their wheeling flights –
Pretty sights.

In The Air, On The Ground
Precision:
It often matters,
Life or death.

Out In The Cold Where It’s Cold
For penguins,
Two is a party.
Three? A crowd.
True? Or Two?
Just one swan
Swam very close to
A mirror?
The Stork
The baby –
For this mother stork,
Who brought it?

The Poet And His Songs by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Posted in I-L, Poems of Other Poets, tagged bard on the hill, birds, brook, cloud, grape vine, haunt him by night, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, his and not his, lips, ocean, pine, poems, poet, poetry, rain, sea, ships, smile, Spring, stars, surge, The Poet And His Songs, tide, voices pursue him by day, white sails, wind on January 19, 2014| Leave a Comment »
The Poet And His Songs
As the birds come in the Spring,
We know not from where;
As the stars come at evening
From depths of the air;
As the rain comes from the cloud,
And the brook from the ground;
As suddenly, low or loud,
Out of silence a sound;
As the grape comes to the vine,
The fruit to the tree;
As the wind comes to the pine,
And the tide to the sea;
As come the white sails of ships
O’er the ocean’s verge;
As comes the smile to the lips,
The foam to the surge;
So come to the Poet his songs,
All hitherward blow
From the misty realm, that belongs
To the vast Unknown.
His, and not his, are the lays
He sings; and their fame
Is his, and not his; and the praise
And the pride of a name.
For voices pursue him by day,
And haunt him by night,
And he listens, and needs must obey,
When the Angel says, “Write!”

Unlike human ones –
Don’t lip sync.

No, no, no. Not you –
Other one.
