Why make so much of fragmentary blue
In here and there a bird, or butterfly,
Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye,
When heaven presents in sheets the solid hue?

Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet) –
Though some savants make earth include the sky;
And blue so far above us comes so high,
It only gives our wish for blue a whet.

If It’s Not Too Much Trouble

I want one –
Perfect one, far left,
Bottom row.

Barren Branch

Midst of life,
Among all the green,
A deadness.

Beauty That Flies

Men may fly,
And color their planes,
Ne’er matching.

And In Many Seasons

In the spring,
Two flowers in bloom –
Daffodils.

The Bright, The Black

Rare picture
Both sun’s light, night’s dark.
Two beauties.

Who Sees?

Does the sea
See love hanging there?
Do we see?

The Touring Tour De Force

I could not paint a butterfly
If pinned and still as stone.
But I see in that palette’s tints
   A talent near unknown.

As artists go, God is the best,
    A talent great and rare.
He painted splash of color in
    The medium of air.

                           Psyche

The butterfly the ancient Grecians made
The soul’s fair emblem, and its only name –
But of the soul, escaped the slavish trade
Of mortal life! – for in this earthly frame
Ours is the reptile’s lot, much toil, much blame,
And to deform and kill the things whereon we feed.
