A Brightness

Across the deep green faces of the cedars fly,

Or flit or flutter with a sudden scarlet flash,

A cardinal, and his much subtler mate – a tie

That binds the two together till their life is ash.

My soul is stirred to watch them wed in work and play,

My world enriched by their united color splash;

For it is rare to be a royal pair this day,
And be together for the long haul, not a dash.

Symphony for the Artist

The sun bled orange behind the blackened trees
Whose slender fingers held no wayward breeze.
Together, paint and lattice made a lace,
That beamed with beauty on the morning’s face.

My thought, as heart’s praise penned a litany:
Heroic work deserves a symphony.
Such grandeur as the dawning’s spreading glow
Needs trumpets, heralds, harps, that all may know.

And then I stilled, and hushed, save heart within –
I heard melodic noises in the glen.
Musicians there were warming up to play,
Preparing in the pit to earn their pay.

Then, one by one, in early morning light,
They paid their tribute to the Maker’s sight.
The birds began their songs, the twitters, tweets,
A swell of sounds that in themselves were treats.

I heard the dove sing “ooah coo, coo, coo”
As jay with his “check-check-check” was chiming, too.
With “what-cheer cheer cheer” the cardinal praised.
Thus hymn to heaven nature rightly raised.
