…………Grow, Little Love

Grow, little love, from a match that’s lit;
Leap upward, love, or grow bit by bit.
Flame like the logs in a fireplace roar,
Or steady burn like a coal’s hot core.
It matters not, if it’s fast or high,
Just so it matches the fire nearby.

Heart-Warmer
(sent in Christmas cards, 2012)

When out of the cold we come seeking a warm space,
It’s a wonderful warmth we find in the fireplace.
There, our fingers, near frozen, we hold out to thaw
Or turn and back to it, warming more than a paw.

But as cozy as crackles in fireplaces are
There’s a warmness that beats it and beats it by far.
Why, look up above you while toasting your hand –
Side by side are the stockings of all your close clan.

They’re there ‘cause they’re coming, and soon will be here;
It’s Christmas and loved ones are all drawing near.
And that is a warmth and a cheer off the chart
‘Cause it reaches inside us and heats up the heart.

My chair?
I sat, resigned;
……Heard pleasant words
……Pass by like birds
……In flocks or herds.

Thoughts?
They fled to her,
……To Mecca, home,
……To fireplace, gloam,
……No more to roam.

Distant?
I traveled long
……To someone’s arms
……Beguiled by charms
……And love’s alarms.

Heart?
It was not in
……The chair I sat,
……Or Ararat,
……Or pleasant chat.

I?
Both here and there –
……Body and soul
……Split pole and pole
……No longer whole.

You said?
I have returned.
……What did I miss,
……When I, like this,
……Adjourned to bliss?
