No ink is now left in the printer.
Old copies are gone; new ones fail.
The birds have flown south for the winter.

The loved ones are new as they enter;
Each day that they visit’s a veil.
No ink is now left in the printer.

The new leaves their minds like a sprinter;
The old is locked up in a jail.
The birds have flown south for the winter.

The life that remains is a splinter
Though body be hearty and hale.
No ink is now left in the printer.

The spring was not owner, but renter.
Both summer and fall have set sail.
The birds have flown south for the winter.

What’s there is a shell with no center;
The heart’s been torn out of the tale.
No ink is now left in the printer.
The birds have flown south for the winter.

Heart-Warmer
(sent in Christmas cards, 2012)

When out of the cold we come seeking a warm space,
It’s a wonderful warmth we find in the fireplace.
There, our fingers, near frozen, we hold out to thaw
Or turn and back to it, warming more than a paw.

But as cozy as crackles in fireplaces are
There’s a warmness that beats it and beats it by far.
Why, look up above you while toasting your hand –
Side by side are the stockings of all your close clan.

They’re there ‘cause they’re coming, and soon will be here;
It’s Christmas and loved ones are all drawing near.
And that is a warmth and a cheer off the chart
‘Cause it reaches inside us and heats up the heart.
