House worthy
Of a president –
FDR.

Built to hide
From voting public –
Handicap.

The photo is mine, of FDR’s home in Hyde Park, New York.

* The haiku I write are lines of 3-5-3 syllables instead of 5-7-5.

‘Neath a stone
A president lies –
LBJ.

——————–

The photo is mine, taken at the LBJ Ranch near Johnson City, Texas.
LBJ’s tombstone is the large one center right; Lady Bird’s large one center left.

sherman

(General William Tecumseh Sherman)

Some thought that Sherman was insane
In early days of war.
Though at the end most didn’t, while
Atlanta thought it more.

He mused, when he in triumph stood
Before a nation, glad,
“I stayed by Grant when he was drunk,
And he while I was mad.”

They thought he’d make a president,
A leader, great, of men.
He said, “I’d rather choose instead
Locked four years in the pen.”

Most likely, he was crazy then,
Just crazy like a fox,
To not let people lock him in
A presidential box.

William Henry Harrison

A song during William Henry Harrison’s presidential campaign
against incumbent Martin Van Buren:

What has caused this great commotion, motion,
…….Our country through?
…….It is the ball a-rolling on,
For Tippecanoe and Tyler too, Tippecanoe and Tyler too.
And with them we’ll beat little Van, Van, Van;
…….Van is a used-up man.

The Civil War etched two men into history,
Head, shoulders o’er the rest, two of our nation’s best –
A president and gen’ral: Lincoln, Lee.

Men came to recognize their pedigree;
They were a different breed; both in their roles could lead.
The Civil War etched two men into history.

One led the North and let the slaves go free;
One led the armed in gray, a fox in ev’ry way –
A president and gen’ral: Lincoln, Lee.

Less Lincoln, North might cave and bend the knee;
Lee knew what Grant would do, as though the future knew.
The Civil War etched two men into history.

One set a course midst scorn like scalding tea;
The other sat astride the route the Blue would ride –
A president and gen’ral: Lincoln, Lee.

Men fell; some soared, and blood became a sea
As two great men arose midst all a nation’s woes.
The Civil War etched two men into history,
A president and gen’ral: Lincoln, Lee.

The nation was the young United States;
Department: War. And Secretary
Was seen as one of the most able greats.
In that, he should have been more wary.

What knowing man will fashion his own noose
With stronger rope and tie it tightly,
So that no frantic struggle lets him loose
And dies while spotlight’s beaming brightly?

He prepped one nation well, and then in war
Became the head of still another –
A nation, new, that fought the land before
Jeff Davis served, one then the other.
