I said, “Let me walk in the fields.”
He said, “No; walk in the town.”
I said, “There are no flowers there.”
He said, “No flowers, but a crown.”

I said, “But the skies are black,
There is nothing but noise and din;”
And he wept as he sent me back;
“There is more,” he said, “there is sin.”

I said, “But the air is thick,
And fogs are veiling the sun.”
He answered, “Yet souls are sick,
And souls in the dark undone.”

I said, “I shall miss the light,
And friends will miss me, they say.”
He answered, “Choose tonight
If I am to miss you, or they.”

I pleaded for time to be given.
He said, “Is it hard to decide?
It will not seem hard in Heaven
To have followed the steps of your Guide.”

I cast one look at the fields,
Then set my face to the town;
He said, “My child, do you yield?
Will you leave the flowers for the crown?”

Then into his hand went mine;
And into my heart came he;
And I walk in a light divine,
The path I had feared to see.

preg woman and child

The sky above is virgin blue;
The breeze has summer’s breath.
The course of Nature’s staying true:
First life, then later, death.

The children run and laugh and play;
Their adults stand and look,
A little back to miss the spray
The water fountains brook.

And in their lot’s a sacrifice
That some for others make
Instead of selfishness like ice
Upon a frozen lake.

The care, concern, is Nature’s course
And not the centeredness
When some because their hearts are coarse
For little lives care less.

We that supported you were mute,
Applauding with one hand,
While children who were so opposed
Went to the streets to stand.

You heard the louder chorus then,
The raucous caw of crows,
And never did we recognize
How much the country owes

You veterans who served in Nam,
(The living and the dead)
In thankless war our thankless land
Was much too quick to shed.

With one hand tied behind your back
By cowards far away,
You heroes, there, enduring much,
Had one more price to pay,

And that from fellow countrymen
Who scoffed as you returned
And spit upon the very ones
Whose blood bought flags they burned.

But you must know their numbers were,
Like traitors, very few,
While we who held you in esteem
Covered the land like dew.

And though it’s late, here’s my salute –
From many others, too.
You gave so much and here’s a bit
Of so much that is due.

I looked at this, and looked again
At flowers spelling DAD.
I may be dreaming, but e’en they
Seem teary-eyed and sad.

Love gives what one another takes,
And takes what one another gives.
And in the giving back and forth,
Such his and her love always lives.

(The seige of the Alamo ended 181 years ago
on March 6, 1836 when the Alamo fell and its
defenders were killed.)

This story of heroes all free men should know,
Of last stand of eagles protecting their nest –
Remember the men of the famed Alamo.

They stood in the way of an armed Mexico,
Like dunes on a beach slow a wave’s swollen crest.
This story of heroes all free men should know.

Surrounded, out-numbered, hope melting like snow,
They proved to the world that it’s freedom that’s best.
Remember the men of the famed Alamo.

An offer, by Travis, to stay or to go.
Those brave men stepped forward and Texas was blessed.
This story of heroes all free men should know.

Deguello, no quarter, was played by the foe
Yet nary a champion abandoned the quest.
Remember the men of the famed Alamo.

A Crockett, a Bowie, and others cut low
In glory and honor are their names now dressed
This story of heroes all free men should know.
Remember the men of the famed Alamo.

To love thee Year by Year –
May less appear
Than sacrifice, and cease –
However, dear,
Forever might be short, I thought to show
And so I pieced it, with a flower, now.

for the fair at Chicago – 1865

O God! in danger’s darkest hour,
In battle’s deadliest field,
Thy name has been our Nation’s tower,
Thy truth her help and shield.

Our lips should fill the air with praise,
Nor pay the debt we owe,
So high above the songs we raise
The floods of mercy flow.

Yet Thou will hear the prayer we speak,
The song of praise we sing, –
Thy children, who thine altar seek
Their grateful gifts to bring.

Thine altar is the sufferer’s bed,
The home of woe and pain,
The soldier’s turfy pillow, red
With battle’s crimson rain.

No smoke of burning stains the air,
No incense-clouds arise;
Thy peaceful servants, Lord, prepare
A bloodless sacrifice.

Lo! for our wounded brothers’ need,
We bear the wine and oil;
For us they faint, for us they bleed,
For them our gracious toil!

O Father, bless the gifts we bring!
Cause Thou thy face to shine,
Till every nation owns her King,
And all the earth is thine.

…………….“Old Hundred”

O Lord of Hosts! Almighty King!
Behold the sacrifice we bring!
To every arm thy strength impart,
Thy spirit shed through every heart!

Wake in our breasts the living fires,
The holy faith that warmed our sires;
Thy hand hath made our Nation free;
To die for her is serving Thee.

Be Thou a pillared flame to show
The midnight snare, the silent foe;
And when the battle thunders loud,
Still guide us in its moving cloud.

God of all Nations! Sovereign Lord!
In thy dread name we draw the sword,
We lift the starry flag on high
That fills with light our stormy sky.

From treason’s rent, from murder’s stain,
Guard Thou its folds till Peace shall reign, –
Till fort and field, till shore and sea,
Join our loud anthem, PRAISE TO THEE!
