If there’s no God, I die, my atoms disappear
Like bubbles blown and frantic to escape their ring.
Wind takes them by the hand – “Let’s run away from here!
Let’s go somewhere and find another song to sing!”

And when I’m gone, perhaps my poems will linger on;
My children with their children and then theirs – a chain;
Or some good deed will swim within my wake – a swan,
Until the sun grows old, expands, and naught remains.

If there’s no God, I live my life upon the sand.
I leave my print; I have a heavy present weight.
And I reflect upon my life and think it’s grand.
But when I die, it’s like I never left the gate.

If there’s no God, then soon or late there is no me.
The sand along my beach is smoothed, impression free.

Sunny here
By the beach and rocks.
Rainy there.

For all great beaches –
Many spades.

Large To Small To Large

The waves to the shore keep on crashing,
Their watery fists always smashing
What’s large into sand,
Small grains that are grand.
Collected, they’re beaches quite dashing.

………………Sonnet 57 – Love

His bucket challenge is to sit in ice
With no relief from frozen Arctic heart.
Why then does he still give and sacrifice
With years and years of suff’ring on his part?

Why does he persevere when there’s no change?
The lock is frozen fast as if with rust.
A locksmith finds the situation strange;
The baker’s never seen such hardened crust.

So why does he still try when there’s no hope?
It seems that he should go away or die.
Yet he persists as though he were a dope;
It does not seem to matter to her why.

The “why” is he has what she does not have.
She has a chafing sand, while he has salve.

Wooden Shoes

I’m asking:
Was it difficult
To tiptoe?

—–

Do they shine?
Or did one have to
Just sand them?
