There’s nothing as sweet as the smell of the rain
To farmers that live on the dry dusty plain.
There’s popcorn and peanuts in dark movie halls;
The scent of perfume on the softest white walls.
But nothing’s as sweet as the smell of the rain.
There’s nothing as sweet as the smell of the rain –
The clean smell, the fresh smell, new life for the grain.
Not ham or bread baking, not ginger or rose;
Like the sun over stars, rain ranks over those.
There’s nothing as sweet as the smell of the rain.
There’s nothing as sweet as the soon-falling rain;
The curtain comes closer, a bold courting swain;
Sky darkens, air cooling, wind bringing the scent;
A rumble, clouds rolling, then moisture, a hint.
There’s nothing as sweet as the soon-falling rain.
There’s nothing as sweet as the soft falling rain;
Like lovers embracing, the clouds give their kiss
And land, quite contented, soaks up the wet bliss.
To farmers that live on the dry dusty plain,
There’s nothing as sweet as the soft falling rain.

A 1/2 inch of rain the week before and another 1/2 inch this week has helped the vegetation here in the midst of the drought. Weathermen say we’re 15 inches behind, so it will take a great deal to catch up. Some in the area got up to 3 inches of rain this week and there were some good rains over large parts of drought-stricken Texas last week. Things are brighter. I wrote this poem about 6 weeks ago and thought I’d publish it in celebration for the rain we did receive.
The pacing, balance and form of your lines are flawless, a quality piece.
Excellent piece!
beautiful post.. and you are right, the smell of rain looming on the horizon is amazing..:-)
My wife and I farmed through the worst drought for 100 years here in Queensland so I really appreciate your poem and sorry to hear you are going through drought. I have a couple of poems on drought and will publish one in a week or two.
If I may quote our own great poet, Henry Lawson:
Oh, may the showers
in torrents fall,
And all the tanks run over;
And may the grass grow green and tall
In pathways of the drover;
I like Lawson’s poem that you quoted. I’ve made myself a note and will eventually post some of his.

I felt your words, as I just knew it was going to rain this morning
but then the flies weren’t biting and the leaves weren’t forming cups to drink
so it was just a left over dream I was having
Beautiful poem, you’re so right, nothing as sweet as rain
I am waiting to plant my fall veggies in the rain…it will come
Take Care…

Thanks. I don’t know where you live but here in Texas we’re hoping for cooler temperatures during September as the cold fronts start rolling down and for some rain that will hopefully accompany them.

I have friends who grew up, married and raised families of their own on that dry dusty plain. To live off the land goes well beyond what I can comprehend…from them I am truly inspired.
It’s a rough life, a bit like the stock market with all the whims and vagaries of weather.
